Background
Nepali widows have a high prevalence of mental disorders, including prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Despite the considerable needs that Nepali widows have for mental health services, resources for mental health in Nepal are limited, amplifying the importance of accurate screening and diagnosis. The objective of this study was to explore the feasibility of implementing a culturally adapted Prolonged Grief Scale (PG-12/17-N) and provide actionable recommendations for its implementation.
MethodsTwenty-five mental health service providers in Kathmandu and Chitwan, Nepal were interviewed using a semi-structured guide based on selected constructs from the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. Qualitative data were inductively and deductively coded and analyzed to identify prominent themes.
ResultsProviders reported that the main advantages of the scale were the need to identify widows at risk, cultural relevance, easy language, and inclusion of detailed and specific symptoms. Perceived weaknesses included the complexity in response options and scoring, length, item redundancy, overlap with depression symptoms, and lack of somatic symptoms. Providers discussed the need for training, supervision, and a referral and detection system required to implement the scale in Nepal. Further development of a brief version of the scale as a routine screener may facilitate detection and referral to care.
ConclusionBased on the results showing need to address PGD in Nepali widows, further efforts are needed to increase awareness about PGD and develop evidence-supported treatments for PGD, after which screening could be made routine for widows.

Emotion regulation dysfunction is characteristic of psychotic disorders, but little is known about how the use of specific types of emotion regulation strategies differs across phases of psychotic illness. This information is vital for understanding factors contributing to psychosis vulnerability states and developing targeted treatments. Three studies were conducted to examine emotion regulation across phases of psychosis, which included (a) adolescent community members with psychotic-like experiences (PLEs; n = 262) and adolescents without PLEs (n = 1,226); (b) adolescents who met clinical high-risk criteria for a prodromal syndrome (n = 29) and healthy controls (n = 29); and (c) outpatients diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (SZ; n = 61) and healthy controls (n = 67). In each study, participants completed the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire and measures of psychiatric symptoms and functional outcome. The three psychosis groups did not differ from each other in reported use of suppression; however, there was evidence for a vulnerability-related, dose-dependent decrease in reappraisal. Across each sample, a lower use of reappraisal was associated with poorer clinical outcomes. Findings indicate that emotion regulation abnormalities occur across a continuum of psychosis vulnerability and represent important targets for intervention.

Biologic asymmetry is present in all bilaterally symmetric organisms as a result of normal developmental instability. However, fossilized organisms, which have undergone distortion due to burial, may have additional asymmetry as a result of taphonomic processes. To investigate this issue, we evaluated the magnitude of shape variation resulting from taphonomy on vertebrate bone using a novel application of fluctuating asymmetry. We quantified the amount of total variance attributed to asymmetry in a taphonomically distorted fossil taxon and compared it with that of three extant taxa. The fossil taxon had an average of 27% higher asymmetry than the extant taxa. In spite of the high amount of taphonomic input, the major axes of shape variation were not greatly altered by removal of the asymmetric component of shape variation. This presents the possibility that either underlying biologic trends drive the principal directions of shape change irrespective of asymmetric taphonomic distortion or that the symmetric taphonomic component is large enough that removing only the asymmetric component is inadequate to restore fossil shape. Our study is the first to present quantitative data on the relative magnitude of taphonomic shape change and presents a new method to further explore how taphonomic processes impact our interpretation of the fossil record.

A new organometallic halide perovskite (OHP) synthesis method, whereby a polymer melt is used to thermodynamically drive the reaction that forms OHP crystallites, is demonstrated. The synthesis method allows for the facile encapsulation of moisture-sensitive OHP without the loss of simplicity during fabrication, which makes OHP materials so attractive for the photovoltaic industry. Degradation of OHP crystallites embedded in a polystyrene matrix was studied using UV-Vis absorbance over a period of several days. The OHP crystallites degrade as a result of the reversible nature of the reaction that forms the crystallites. After the reversion to precursors (PbI2 and CH3NH3I) the CH3NH3I irreversibly degrades [2] allowing the degradation to be tracked via optical interrogation. Additionally, surface morphology and elemental analysis of fabricated samples was carried out using SEM/EDS techniques.

Metabarcoding, the coupling of DNA-based species identification and high-throughput sequencing, offers enormous promise for arthropod biodiversity studies but factors such as cost, speed and ease-of-use of bioinformatic pipelines, crucial for making the leapt from demonstration studies to a real-world application, have not yet been adequately addressed. Here, four published and one newly designed primer sets were tested across a diverse set of 80 arthropod species, representing 11 orders, to establish optimal protocols for Illumina-based metabarcoding of tropical Malaise trap samples. Two primer sets which showed the highest amplification success with individual specimen polymerase chain reaction (PCR, 98%) were used for bulk PCR and Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The sequencing outputs were subjected to both manual and simple metagenomics quality control and filtering pipelines. We obtained acceptable detection rates after bulk PCR and high-throughput sequencing (80–90% of input species) but analyses were complicated by putative heteroplasmic sequences and contamination. The manual pipeline produced similar or better outputs to the simple metagenomics pipeline (1.4 compared with 0.5 expected:unexpected Operational Taxonomic Units). Our study suggests that metabarcoding is slowly becoming as cheap, fast and easy as conventional DNA barcoding, and that Malaise trap metabarcoding may soon fulfill its potential, providing a thermometer for biodiversity.

Composite images of the intensity of solar radiation scattered by dust in Halley’s coma are constructed by using the three-channel spectra obtained during the approach phase of the Vega 2 spacecraft. They cover a sector centered on the nucleus that has a radius of 40000 km and an angular extent of 50°. A radial plot of dust-scattered intensity shows that it varies as the inverse of impact parameter p where p is smaller than 3200 km or higher than 7000 km. In the intermediate 3200-7000 km distance range, the intensity varies as p−1.52. At longer distances, two jets are present with a contrast comparable to the gas jets which appear in the OH and CN images.
The color of dust shows a slight excess of near-UV radiation in a diffuse region between 10000 and 30000 km which appears to be connected with the two jets. In the region called “valley”, between the jets at distances p > 25000 km, the dust-scattered intensity shows an excess of red. The color, expressed as the ratio of intensities at 377,482 and 607 nm is interpreted in terms of Mie theory. It is suggested that the dust particles progressively differentiate. A proportionally more important population of small submicronic grains appears at p > 8000 km. This population seems to correlate with the jets.
